Bengkung Belly Binding

One of the newest offerings at Sacred Womb Therapeutics is Bengkung Belly Binding, a traditional postpartum practice that I learned from my dear friend and incredible doula & mother, Justina.

As I continue to deepen my postpartum care offerings, it is important to me to honor the teachers, lineages, and cultures that have preserved these healing traditions for generations.

What Is Bengkung Belly Binding?

Bengkung belly binding is a traditional postpartum practice that originated in Malaysia and has been used for centuries to support mothers during the sacred postpartum period.

Unlike modern waist trainers or compression garments designed to alter appearance, Bengkung binding is rooted in postpartum recovery and maternal care. Using a long strip of breathable fabric, the abdomen and torso are gently wrapped from the hips to the rib cage, creating a cocoon-like feeling of support during the weeks following birth.

Traditionally, the binding would be applied daily during the postpartum confinement period, often alongside warming foods, herbal therapies, massage, rest, and community support.

The Cultural Significance of Postpartum Care

Many traditional cultures recognize that birth is a profound physical, emotional, and spiritual transition.

In Traditional Mexican Medicine, we honor La Cuarentena—the first forty days after birth—as a sacred window for healing and restoration. Similar postpartum traditions exist throughout Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Indigenous cultures around the world.

Bengkung belly binding is one example of how communities have historically cared for new mothers, recognizing that postpartum recovery deserves time, support, and intention.

These traditions remind us that healing after birth is not something a mother should navigate alone.

Potential Benefits of Belly Binding

Many mothers report that Bengkung belly binding helps them feel:

• Supported through the abdomen and low back

• More aware of posture and body mechanics

• Comfortable during daily activities

• Grounded and contained during the postpartum transition

• Connected to a daily ritual of rest and recovery

While every postpartum experience is unique, many women appreciate the physical and emotional support that belly binding can provide during the early days and weeks after birth.

My Approach

I offer Bengkung belly binding as part of my postpartum care services because I believe mothers deserve nurturing, hands-on support after birth.

My approach combines traditional belly binding with womb-centered postpartum massage, education, and practical guidance for continued use at home. During our sessions, I can also teach you or a loved one how to safely apply the wrap so that the practice can continue between visits and after our last session together.

Whether you choose a single postpartum session or my Belly Binding Package, my goal is to help you feel supported, nourished, and cared for during one of life's most transformative seasons.

Postpartum healing is not about "bouncing back." It is about being held, supported, and given the space to recover as you step into motherhood.
