Cierre de Caderas: The Sacred Ritual of Closing the Bones

If you’ve been on a healing journey—whether recovering from childbirth, a breakup, a big life transition, or simply feeling energetically “open” and scattered—you may benefit from a beautiful, ancestral practice called Cierre de Caderas, also known as the Closing of the Bones Ceremony.
This sacred ritual is rooted in Mayan and other Indigenous Latin American traditions, offering a deeply restorative experience for the body, mind, and spirit. And now, after an incredibly nourishing trip to the Yucatán where I studied this medicina with maestras who’ve preserved the practice for generations, I’m honored to bring it home and share it with you. 💖
What Is Cierre de Caderas?
Cierre de Caderas, which translates to “closing of the hips,” is a ceremonial bodywork practice traditionally performed after La Cuarentena—but its power extends far beyond the postpartum window. This ritual involves gently wrapping the body with rebozos (Mexican shawls) at key points—head, shoulders, ribs, hips, and feet—to help energetically “close” the body after periods of expansion, trauma, loss, or transition.
Who Is It For?
While the Cierre de Caderas is a traditional and vital part of La Cuarentena, you do not need to have given birth to receive this ceremony. Cierre de Caderas is for anyone who is:
✨ Seeking closure after a loss, miscarriage, abortion, or breakup
✨ Feeling energetically “open” or ungrounded
✨ Healing after childbirth or postpartum
✨ Transitioning through a major life shift (menarche, menopause, divorce, new career, etc.)
✨ Craving sacred rest, recalibration, and return to center
It can also be a powerful ritual for honoring new chapters, birthdays, or fresh beginnings. ✨
What to Expect During the Ceremony
Each practitioner brings their own essence to this work, but a typical Cierre de Caderas session with me may include:
☕ A cup of nourishing womb té or delicious, heart-opening cacao
💆🏽 Full body massage or gentle abdominal or womb massage
🌿 Energetic limpia (cleansing)
💖 Guided intention setting and meditation
🧣 Closing of the hips using traditional rebozo techniques
✨ Chakra-balancing tuning forks
You’ll be wrapped tightly yet gently, held with love, and invited to surrender into deep rest. For my birthday cerrada, it felt like being enveloped in a cocoon—everything that no longer served me melting away—as I emerged like a butterfly: reborn, renewed, and deeply supported. I even felt my ancestors come through to help close my hips! Yes... I cried.
Why It Matters
We live in a world that rushes us through major life changes without offering space to pause, grieve, or complete the cycle.
Cierre de Caderas reminds us that healing is cyclical, not linear, and that ritual matters. It helps bring closure to transitions, energetic containment to the body, and a feeling of wholeness and sacred completion that so many of us crave.
