Rest Is Medicine: Why Slowing Down May Be the Most Healing Thing You Can Do

Rest is medicine

In today's world, we're constantly told to do more. Wake up earlier. Work harder. Exercise more. Say yes to every opportunity. Stay productive. Keep pushing. But our bodies were never designed to live in a constant state of "go."

As women, our hormones, menstrual cycles, fertility, and nervous systems are deeply connected. When we're constantly rushing, multitasking, and carrying the weight of everyone else's needs, our bodies often begin communicating that something needs to change through fatigue, disrupted cycles, tension, and other physical symptoms.

Your Nervous System Is Always Listening

Your nervous system constantly scans your environment, asking one simple question: Am I safe?

When the answer is "yes," your body can shift into what's known as the rest-and-digest state. This is where healing, digestion, tissue repair, hormone production, and fertility thrive.

When the answer is "not really"—whether because of chronic stress, poor sleep, emotional overwhelm, or never taking a break—your body prioritizes survival over restoration.

That doesn't mean your body is working against you. It means it's doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Stress and Hormones Go Hand in Hand

Our hormones don't work independently. They're part of a beautifully interconnected system. When stress becomes chronic, it can influence many aspects of our womb health, including:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles

  • Increased PMS symptoms

  • Painful periods

  • Difficulty ovulating

  • Lower libido

  • Fatigue and burnout

  • Fertility challenges

While stress isn't the sole cause of these concerns, it can certainly be one piece of the puzzle.

Creating space for rest helps support the nervous system, which in turn creates a healthier environment for hormonal balance.

Rest Supports Fertility, Too

One of the biggest mistakes we often make (and I say this from personal experience) is treating our fertility as something we have to control. We track everything. Optimize everything. Research everything. In the pursuit of doing everything "right," we often forget to make space for rest.

While information can be incredibly empowering, constantly living in a state of vigilance can become exhausting. Your fertility journey deserves moments of peace, too. When we rest, we create space for our body to do what it's designed to do.

Rest Is More Than Sleep

When I say "rest," I don't only mean taking a nap. Rest can look like:

  • Spending time in nature

  • Going to bed earlier

  • Enjoying an unhurried meal

  • Saying no without guilt

  • Asking for help

  • Reading a book instead of scrolling your phone

  • Taking a slow walk

  • Receiving bodywork

  • Sitting quietly with a cup of tea

  • Doing absolutely nothing for a few minutes

Rest isn't laziness. It's nourishment.

As you move through each day, ask yourself: Where can I create a little more space?

Maybe that means protecting your bedtime.

Maybe it means leaving one afternoon unscheduled.

Maybe it means saying "not right now" instead of "yes."

Whatever it looks like, know this: Your body doesn't always need you to push harder. Sometimes it simply needs you to pause. Because rest isn't something you have to earn. Rest is medicine.
