Infrared Light Therapy: A Science-Backed Approach to Supporting Fertility

Infrared Light Therapy for Fertility

Infertility can feel isolating, overwhelming, and at times, discouraging—especially for those navigating the journey later in life. That’s why I’m so excited to introduce Infrared Light Therapy (LLLT) as a new service in my practice. This pain-free, non-invasive modality offers a powerful complement to the womb care practices I teach, and it’s rooted in real science!

Why Infrared Light Therapy for Fertility?

A fascinating study conducted in Japan explored the use of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for women with severe infertility. Participants were women with an average age of nearly 40, many of whom had struggled with infertility for over 9 years and had not achieved pregnancy through assisted reproductive technology (ART).

The therapy, which used an 830 nm diode LLLT applied in Ohshiro’s proximal priority technique, was administered over multiple sessions. The results were remarkable:

  • In the first trial of 74 participants, 21.7% achieved pregnancy, with 68% of those pregnancies resulting in live births.

  • In the extended trial of 701 participants, 22.3% achieved pregnancy, and 50% of those resulted in live births.

  • No adverse events were reported—this therapy is entirely pain-free and side effect-free.

These results show that infrared light therapy could offer hope to those struggling with infertility, especially older women or anyone facing challenges with ART.

How It Works

Infrared light penetrates tissues at a cellular level, stimulating blood flow, reducing inflammation, and supporting tissue repair. When applied to the reproductive organs, it may enhance ovarian function, improve uterine blood flow, and support the conditions your body needs for conception.

How LLLT Improves Blood Flow

An example of the physical effects of LLLT is shown in the images below.

Figure 1. Full-body thermographs showing improved circulation after sequential LLLT sessions.

Full-body thermographs of a patient illustrate:

  1. Before LLLT: Cold regions over the abdomen, lumbar area, and lower extremities, indicating restricted blood flow—including to the uterus and ovaries.

  2. After one session: Warmth spreads down the torso and back, showing improved circulation to these areas.

  3. After five sessions: Dramatic whole-body warming, reflecting enhanced systemic blood flow.

Blood is one of our body’s “superhighways,” delivering oxygen, nutrients, and LLLT-mediated cytokines. Improved blood flow can enhance reproductive health and the effectiveness of fertility treatments.

LLLT + ART: Enhanced Success Rates

When LLLT is combined with ART, the study demonstrated significantly higher pregnancy rates—especially in older patients:

🌸 The Mind-Body Benefits of IR/LLLT

While the physiological benefits of infrared/low-level laser therapy (LLLT) are impressive—like improved circulation, tissue health, and support for reproductive function—we also must not overlook its psychosomatic impact.

A survey conducted with 27 patients after completing LLLT (unpublished study) highlighted significant improvements in overall well-being, immune-related health, and fertility-specific factors. One of the highest-rated improvements reported was in the quality of ovarian follicles, suggesting that LLLT supports not only physical but also mental and emotional health during the fertility journey.
